What makes a good logo

• Simple. A logo that isn't cluttered is easier to remember, and easier to describe to someone else.
• Original. It should have something distinctive about it.
• Unlike anyone else's. It must not look like another company's logo. Not even a little.

If a logo does all three, it's a good logo.

Common logo mistakes to avoid

• Copying. Borrowing too heavily from other logos until yours looks like theirs.
• Over-decorating. Too many colours, clashing styles, too much going on.
• Using a free downloaded logo. This is the worst mistake of all (see below).

Why you shouldn't use a free logo download

The biggest risk with a free logo is that someone else uses it too. Worse, that someone is often in the same industry, because businesses in the same field tend to pick the same kinds of logos. When two businesses in the same field have the same logo, your customers can mistake a competitor for you and hire them instead.

A logo created for you by a designer, following a proper process, is yours alone and can't be legitimately reused by competitors.
