The simplest way to think of a domain is as an empty plot of land.
Once you own a plot with a full address, nobody else can take it unless they buy it from you, and you are free to build whatever house you like on it.
With a domain address of your own (like www.myanmarwebdesigner.com), you can go on to set up a website or a Google business email account on it.
Registering your domain early also means you secure the name you want before someone else does, and when it is time to build your website you won’t need to pay the domain registration fee again.
Two kinds of domains: TLDs and ccTLDs
TLD stands for Top-Level Domain. There are more than a thousand extensions, including:
- .com
- .org
- .net
- .info
ccTLD stands for Country Code Top-Level Domain. These include a country code, for example:
- .com.mm
- .net.mm
One look at a ccTLD tells you straight away which country the website belongs to.
We hope this gives you a clear idea of what a domain is. We’ll keep sharing more IT tips on the MWD website, so do come back and read them.
