Good graphic design is essential if you want people to remember your business easily and think highly of it.
Even if you don’t have the chance to work with a professional designer, you can still avoid the basic mistakes. Here are a few tips from MWD to help.
1. Using too many fonts
A design that mixes lots of different fonts can easily end up looking cheap if they aren’t chosen with care.
As a rule, stick to no more than three fonts in one design. You can still vary them by using bold, light or italic styles.
2. Using fonts that don’t suit the design
Don’t just pick the font you always use, or the one that looks prettiest.
Think about the mood of the design first: is it soft, bold or sombre? Choosing a font that matches that mood will make your design look more polished and attractive.
3. Poor colour combinations
If you ignore the background colour when combining colours, the text can become hard to read and the whole design can look odd.
When you combine colours, get the light and dark contrast right and only use colours that make the text stand out against the background.
4. Getting the text hierarchy wrong
Don’t set every piece of text in large type, or every piece in small type.
Make only the few words you want to highlight large, and set the less important text smaller. Your message will come across much more clearly.
5. Uneven spacing
Inconsistent spacing between letters and lines, text crammed in with no breathing room, or elements placed at random can ruin a design.
Keep the elements tidy, make the key information stand out and keep the spacing even. That is what makes a design clear and easy to understand.
